Durango's natural beauty offers exquisite array of year round recreational activities. Durango Colorado is known for its historical wonder. Still even today Durango Colorado offers a step back into the old west. Established in 1881 when Denver and the Rio Grande Railroad decided to build a track to Silverton, and established Durango as it's hub to transport ore from the areas surrounding mountains. The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad still runs today, retracing the historical wonders of the old American west. The Durango& Silverton Railroad offers an unforgettable experience through spectacular and breathtaking canyons aboard a coal-fired, steam-powered locomotive on the same tracks miner's, cowboys and settlers of the Old West took more than a century ago. Durango Colorado offers endless summer and winter recreational opportunities. Durango's activities include skiing, snowboarding, rafting, kayaking, mountain biking, hiking, camping, horseback rides, hunting, fishing, backcountry and mining tours, golfing, rock climbing, live concerts, gaming, art gallery walks and much more. Durango Colorado is also the home of Fort Lewis College offering many different curriculums. Located 37 miles west of Durango is the ancient home of the Pueblo Indians known as the Mesa Verdeans. Still today you can find Anasazi cliff dwellings and artifacts. Fort Lewis College and its Center of Southwest Studies attract scholars in Indian and southwestern history. Durango Colorado is the home of the Durango Mountain Resort. The Durango Mountain Resort is located about 10 minutes outside of Durango Colorado. Durango boasts because of its charming historical district filled with galleries, boutiques and other retail opportunities. The Strater Hotel, built in 1887, and a reflection of the town's prosperity, remains a central attraction in downtown Durango.
