Chama, population 2,000, is a sleepy resort town located just a few miles from the Colorado Border and at the northern tip of the Jemez Mountains. Visitors to Chama are generally drawn to the area by its abundance of recreational options, including excellent fishing and hiking during the summer months and Nordic skiing and snowmobiling during the winter months. A mix of peoples, history, and scenic beauty produces a feeling in Chama New Mexico that most people find irresistible. Nestled in the Chama river valley (Rio Chama), this town is a great example of classic northern New Mexico. When you enter Chama from the south you see a vast valley full of pasture surrounded by mountains. As you arrive in town, you see the railroad crossbucks foreshadowing more good things to come. Main Street looks a lot today as it did in the 1890's. There are many gorgeous old homes, churches and other buildings. |
