 Farmington, population 43,000, sits at an elevation of just over 5,000 feet at the confluence of the San Juan, La Plata and Animas River systems. Known to the Navajo as Tahota, or 'amongst the rivers', Farmington serves as an excellent gateway town to the many recreational opportunities that the northwestern part of New Mexico has to offer. Farmington originally sprouted from ranch and agricultural roots, though today the town supports itself through a mix of mining, hydroelectric power generation and tourism. Farmington is close to the four corners area and located at the confluence of the San Juan, Animas, and La Plata rivers, on the Colorado Plateau in the northwest part of the San Juan Basin.
