| Waterfall Run on the Moose Creek |
You wont find a more crystal clear stream in all of Alaska. Starting high up in the Talkeetna Mountains, Moose Creek winds its way through a high alpine valley before cutting a tight deep gorge for the final seven miles of its descent to the Matanuska River. From the put-in to the take-out it is a fast, boulder strewn creek with nothing more than micro-eddies. The class three rating should not lure beginners or low end intermediate paddlers into attempting this run. Simply getting knocked over in this shallow stream would be a painful ordeal and swimming should be emphatically avoided. That said, the water is usually not pushy enough to prevent ramming your nose into the bank and quickly jumping out. A low bridge downstream of the put-in can cause problems at higher water. About a mile and a half above the take-out true canyon walls are encountered and a slide rapid leads to a pool above an obvious horizon line. GET OUT! A quick scout will lead down to a fifteen foot waterfall which creates a hydraulic feature that seems to push water back upstream and even behind the curtain; portaging is advised. The creek then mellows down to the Glenn Hwy and the comfort of the ice cold beers you stashed at the take-out.
