Put In:  Mule Hoof CG (Salt River Canyon Bridge, Hwy 60)
Take Out:  Highway 288 Bridge
Difficulty:  Class III , Class IV
Gradient:  22 ft/mi
Run Length:  52 miles
Current Streamflow:  267 cfs @ 02/08/2012 09:30 PM - SALT RIVER NEAR ROOSEVELT, AZ., reading taken from USGS
Good Level:  800 to 3,000 cfs
Streamflow Comments: 

The flow near roosevelt is at the takeout. The flow at chrysotile is for the put-in. Check our Arizona stream flow page.

Season Comments:  February, March, April, May, June
Primary Season: 

Variable flows that can be difficult to predict. Usually mid-March to late April.

Permit:  National Forest permit is required from March 1 - May 15. A recreation permit is also required by the White Mountain Apache Tribe. Go to our private boater permit page for more permit info.
Character/Similar To:  Challenging Class III whitewater for first 20 miles, then changes character and becomes Class IV whitewater through rugged desert canyon.
Water Craft:  kayak,wwcan,raft
Land Ownership:  Apache Indian Reservation for first 30 miles, mostly national forest thereafter.
Wilderness:  Yes
Camping on River:  Several good sites available. Permits are required to camp on the Fort Apache Reservation.
Location:  In the Canyon Country (AZ), 130 miles East of Phoenix
Shuttle Logistics: 

Put-in: From Phoenix, take US 60 east to the Salt River Canyon Bridge, 40 miles northeast of Globe, Arizona. Cross over the Salt River and turn west onto the road that parallels the river. You will be on river right. Proceed about a quarter mile to Mule Hoof Campground.

Take-out: From US 60 just west of Globe, Arizona, head north on Arizona Hwy 88 and drive 15 miles to Arizona Hwy 288. Drive about 5 miles on Hwy 288 to the bridge over the Salt River. Take-out just downriver on the left bank.
