The North Fork American River at North Fork Dam gauge is about 28 miles below this run, this section should have most of the flow of this gauge.

Primary Season: 

This section of river only runs during the winter and spring, usually after a few days of heavy rain or during normal snowmelt.

Permit:  None presently required
Character/Similar To:  Mostly class IV rapids, a section of this run called Giant Gap Gorge contains a few class V rapids that are easily paddled.
Hazards:  This is a very isolated gorge, hiking out would be very difficult. Scout the class V rapids in the Giant Gap Gorge.

Location:  In the Pacific Region (CA), 65 miles Northeast of Sacramento
Shuttle Logistics: 

Put-In: Take the Alta exit off I-80 about 25 miles northeast of Auburn. Turn south onto Casa Loma Road and follow it about 3 miles to the trailhead. It's about a 2 mile hike down the trail to the put-in.

Take-Out: Take the Colfax exit from I-80. On the south side of the Interstate turn right onto Canyon Way. Follow this road for about a quarter mile and turn left onto Colfax-Iowa Road. Continue to the bridge over the river.
