Put In:  Below Main Dam Campground
Take Out:  Democrat Picnic Area
Difficulty: 
Gradient:  28 ft/mi
Run Length:  18 miles (can be made shorter)

Good Level:  1,000 - 3,000 cfs
Season Comments:  June, July, August
Permit:  Required May 15 through September 15. Call the either the Greenhorn Ranger District at 805-871-2223 or the Cannell Ranger District at 619-376-3781.
Hazards:  Royal Flush Rapid.
Water Craft:  kayak,wwcan,raft
Land Ownership:  Mostly public.
Wilderness:  No
Camping on River:  Public and private campgrounds are in the area. Taking gear on the river to camp is not recommended because of the portage around Royal Flush Rapid.
Location:  In the Pacific Region (CA), 320 miles South of Sacramento
Shuttle Logistics:  Take Out: From Bakersfield, drive northeast on California Highway 178. Once in the Kern Canyon you will pass miles of impressive yet unboatable rapids. After the view of these rapids turn left onto a dirt road leading to Democrat Picnic Area. Watch for the signs.

Put In: Continue driving up California Highway 178 and turn left onto California Highway 155 at the town of Lake Isabella. Turn left onto an unpaved road located across the highway from the road leading to the Army Corps of Engineers headquarters and about a quarter mile before Highway 155 crosses the river. Take this road for about a half mile to the put-in.
