Character/Similar To:  The first 6.5 miles offer several good Class II rapids, providing a pleasant float. The river then enters the narrow, steep-walled Oregon Hole Gorge with big Class V rapids.

Camping on River:  Forest Service Campground at Panther Flat, 2 miles up Hwy 199 from the put-in. Jedediah Smith State Park, 3 miles downstream from the take-out.
Location:  In the Pacific Region (CA), 402 miles Northwest of Sacramento
Shuttle Logistics:  Put-in: Located just above the confluence of the North Fork and the Middle Fork. Turn north off Hwy 199 at Gasquet, about 20 miles east of Crescent City, and cross the Middle Fork. A trail leads from a turnout on the north side of the bridge down to the confluence of the North and Middle Forks.

Take-out: To reach the take-out above Oregon Hole Gorge, drive about 6 miles west of Gasquet on Hwy 199 and find the turnout near Caltrans highway marker 9.09. A short trail leads down to the river. Experts running the gorge can take-out just down stream from the South Fork Road bridge across the main river. Vehicle access is via either of two rough dirt roads: the first begins at the intersection of the highway and South Fork Road, the second intersects South Fork Road several hundred yards downstream from the bridge across the Smith.
