South Fork Tuolumne River Whitewater Kayaking Trip on the Tuolumne River

Put In:  Highway 120 Bridge
Take Out:  Rainbow Pool Picnic Area
Difficulty:  Class IV , Class V , Portage
Gradient:  137 fpm
Run Length:  6 miles
Good Level:  400 - 800 cfs, Optimum 600 cfs
Streamflow Comments:  There is no gauge for this section of river
Season Comments:  January, February, March, April, May, November, December
Primary Season:  This section of river only runs in the winter and spring, usually after a few days of heavy rain or during normal snowmelt.
Permit:  None presently required
Character/Similar To:  Lots of pool drop rapids and waterfalls in a few scenic granite gorges.
Hazards:  There are a few waterfalls that should be scouted or portaged. About halfway through the run at the end of a short reservoir, portage the 25-foot tall dam. Below the take out the river drops 1,200 feet in the next 3 miles to the main Tuolumne River, make sure and take out.

Location:  In the Pacific Region (CA), 121 miles (2 hours 15 minutes) Southeast of Sacramento
Shuttle Logistics: 

Take Out: From Groveland drive east on Highway 120 for 13 miles. On the west side of the bridge take a small road leading to Rainbow Pool Picnic Area.

Put In: From the take out return to Highway 120. Head east for 7 miles to the bridge that crosses over the South Fork Tuolumne River.
