| Granite Gorge on the Arkansas River |
Pine Creek and the Numbers are home to some of the state's most challenging whitewater. The big water starts below the small town of Granite, named simply for the granite rocks strewn about this part of the valley
Unlike parts of the Arkansas River downstream, glaciers shaped this section of the valley when the ice in the valleys of Pine Creek, Lake Creek, and Clear Creek stretched from the peaks down to where the present day river is.
Huge glacial dams formed up the Pine Creek Valley and dammed Pine Creek. When the ice dams finally broke loose, the pent up water sent the glacial moraine pounding down into the Arkansas River Valley and created the river features you see today.
