Put In:  Chukar Trail
Take Out:  North Fork of the Gunnison
Difficulty:  Class III > 700 cfs , Class IV > 3,500 cfs
Gradient:  22 ft/mi
Run Length:  13.4 miles
Current Streamflow:  386 cfs @ 05/26/2012 12:30 PM - GUNNISON RIVER BELOW GUNNISON TUNNEL, CO., reading taken from USGS
Flow Information (phone):  watertalk 303-831-7135; 4* 6*. Gunnison River at Delta, CO.
Good Level:  800 - 4000 cfs
Season Comments:  May, June, July, August, September
Primary Season:  This section of the Gunnison River is dam-controlled and usually runs from May to September
Permit:  Self-registration at the put in.
Character/Similar To:  Mostly pool drop class III rapids through a scenic semi-remote canyon. At high water this section contains very good play.
Hazards:  This run is slightly remote.
Water Craft:  kayak,wwcan,raft
Land Ownership:  Almost all BLM
Wilderness:  YES
Camping on River:  Several excellent campsites.
Location:  In the Rocky Mtn Region (CO), 287 miles Southwest of Denver, CO
Shuttle Logistics:  Put In: From Delta, CO take US 50 south for approximately 12 miles. Turn east on Falcon Drive just south of Olathe. Continue for 3.5 miles and the name changes to Peach Tree Road. Stay on Peach Tree Road for another 1.5 miles then bear right at the fork following the sign that points to the Chukar Trail. Follow this road for about six miles to the Chukar Trailhead. This road requires a high clearance vehicle and four wheel drive is advisable. When wet the road surface is like grease and is impassable.

Take Out: From Delta, CO drive east on CO Hwy 92. Just past mile marker 14 turn south onto a road marked as the turnoff to Gunnison Forks. This unpaved road continues for about a mile to the BLM access on the North Fork at the confluence. This road also leads to the Gunnison River Pleasure Park just below the confluence which will allow you to take out there for a small fee. The Pleasure Park also offers shuttle services. Their phone number is 970-872-2525.
