Gunny Town Run Whitewater Kayaking & Canoeing Trip on the Gunnison River

Take Out:  McCabes Lane
Difficulty:  Class II , Class III
Gradient:  25 fpm
Run Length:  8.6 miles
Current Streamflow:  237 cfs @ 12/14/2016 10:15 AM - GUNNISON RIVER NEAR GUNNISON, CO., reading taken from USGS
Good Level:  350 - 6,000 cfs
Streamflow Comments:  Runs highest during peak runoff. Optimum flow for the play park is around 650 cfs.
Season Comments:  April, May, June, July, August, September, October
Primary Season:  This section usually runs from early spring to early fall
Permit:  None presently required
Character/Similar To:  Class II to three rapids. The run flows right through the town of Gunnison. In the play park there is a walking path that follows the river, also there is a developed park with a picnic area complete with public grills.
Hazards:  One drop below the Gunnison play park called Psychedelic Falls should be scouted because it seems to change every year. Talk to the local boating crowd for more beta on this drop

Land Ownership:  Mostly private property
Wilderness:  No
Camping on River:  No but there is a great picnic area in the town of Gunnison.
Location:  In the Rocky Mtn Region (CO), 200 miles (4 hours 12 minutes) Southwest of Denver
Shuttle Logistics: 

Put In: Some popular launch spots are near the Almont Post Office or at “North” Bridge just north of Gunnison on Highway 135 near Garlic Mike’s Restaurant.

Take Out: Just past Gunnison take a left onto McCabe’s Lane off of Highway 50. The take out is ¼ mile down the road in the park. When floating down the river make sure and take out above the only bridge that is fit for a car. If you float past this bridge you will find yourself floating into Blue Mesa Reservoir.
