Take Out:  Lower Piedra Campground
Difficulty: 
Gradient:  53 ft/mi
Run Length:  20 miles

Good Level:  700-2,000 cfs

Character/Similar To:  This long run through narrow forested canyons has some significant drops, as well as calm water. The Second Box consists of two steep and pushy rapids with a few possible play spots. The First Box (the downstream canyon) is much more difficult and contains three significant, steep and bony rapids.
Hazards:  Numerous logs. Difficult scouting and portages. Landslides can alter rapids at any time.

Land Ownership:  Mostly National Forest
Wilderness:  Yes
Camping on River:  Many sites except in the box canyons. Most two day trips camp at First Fork Campground. There are USFS campgrounds at the put-in and take-out.
Location:  In the Rocky Mtn Region (CO), 318 miles Southwest of Denver
Shuttle Logistics: 

Put-in: Turn north off of US 160 two miles west of Pagosa Springs onto Piedra Road (USFS Road 631) and drive about 16 miles to the bridge near Piedra Picnic Ground.

Take-out: Return to US 160, drive west 19 miles, cross the Piedra, turn right on unpaved USFS Road 621 which leads over a mile to the Lower Piedra Campground.
