The put-in is about three miles east of Deary at Helmer on Hwy 3. On the south side of the road a national forest campground sign marks the turn. Follow this road (also labeled 1963) south for 2.5 miles to the Little Boulder Campground. Stay left at the Y and park in the lot on the left before crossing over the bridge. The take out is up from Kendrick on the Cedar Ridge Road that follows the river on river right. Head up seven miles from Kendrick to the turnout 100 meters down from Cedar Creek.

Canyon Run on the Potlatch River

The character of the Potlatch Canyon is unique to Idaho's wilderness runs. Just downstream from the put-in, the river drops into a deep basalt gorge. Lush forests of pine and fir cover the canyon sides. The run starts with a couple miles of class I and II whitewater which lead into a tight granite gorge. A large tributary pouring in on river right signifies the crux move is soon to come. The biggest drop is Coleman Falls, a long class V, made up of sticky ledges and an undercut on the left. Scout or portage on river right. The right line is the easiest. The gorge continues for about five miles. The walls come together forming a kind of exit gate as it nears the end. From here, about a mile of difficult whitewater remains. After the last rapid, begin the long class II-III paddle out.
