| Loon Creek on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River |
Loon Creek is one of the more beautiful creeks in Idaho. At the put-in, it is a tight, winding creek with a couple of ledge drops and fun rock gardens. About four miles down, hot springs drain in from the right. After six more miles just past Biggs Ranch, the whitewater picks up. The good rapids start as the canyon closes in. A long class III-IV rock garden starts it off leading into a tight class V. The next big rapid is a blind left turn. The beginning of the gorge is signaled by the Bennett Creek Pack Bridge. The hot springs are just a mile below and the confluence is one more after that.
