Difficulty:  Class IV , Class V

Run Length:  54 miles (32 on the South Fork and 22 on the Main

Good Level:  1,000-4,000 cfs
Season Comments:  June, July, August
Permit:  Not presently required on the South Fork but required on the Main Salmon. Register at a voluntary sign-in box just downstream from the Secesh confluence. Check with the USFS for updated information.
Character/Similar To:  Steep mountain river with boulder choked rapids. At low water the river is rocky, technical and mostly class IV. At high flows the whitewater is huge and nearly continuous. An excellent mix of whitewater, scenery and seclusion.
Hazards:  Log hazards, difficulty at high water, and a possible portage at Fall Creek Rapid.

Land Ownership:  National Forest; a few private cabins.
Wilderness:  Yes
Camping on River:  Yes, good riverside sites.
Location:  In the Rocky Mtn Region (ID), 144 miles North of Boise
Shuttle Logistics:  Put-in: From McCall, go east on Lick Creek Road 34 miles to the Secesh-South Fork confluence. Turn left and drive to the end of the road.

Take-out: Return to McCall and drive north about 46 miles on Hwy 55 and US 95 to Riggins. The take-out is east of Riggins, up the Salmon about 26 miles to Vinegar Creek.
