To reach the put-in, take Granite Pass Road from the top of Lolo Pass, drive six miles to the top of Granite Pass. Stay on the main road, drive about six more miles to the bridge crossing the Crooked Fork just below the confluence of Hopeful Creek. The take-out is the Hwy 12 bridge crossing the Crooked Fork at the bottom of Lolo Pass Grade.

The run begins with a number of logjams and portages. After a couple of miles the gradient picks up with several bedrock water slides as a reward. After Boulder Creek, the volume doubles, and the next two miles are the best part of the run. There are two small gorges and with several challenging drops. After this section, the river mellows to class II and III for the last five miles.
