3 Day Mission on the Stillwater River

Drive up Daisy Pass until the road is blocked with snow.  From here hike to the top of the pass to the sign pointing the way to headwaters of the Stillwater.  An hour long hike will lead to a small stream which is the Stillwater.  Put in where possible.  Follow down.  Be ready for a lot of walking, probable more portaging than paddling.  The first couple of days go like this.

The Vertical Lakes section make this mission worthwhile.  A small mountain in the valley called Tripod Hill signals the beginning of the gorge.  The first rapid is usually portaged left.  The next horizon line also signals a portage on the right.  After the first gorge are four lakes joined by class V drops.  Most are relatively clean but should be scouted.  The run doesn't slow down from here.  Reaching the Pots means more portaging but also a triumphant end with cold beers and jubilation.
