Permit:  None presently required. Maximum group size of 10 in designatd Wilderness Areas. Back-country permit required to camp on National Park land.
Character/Similar To:  Magnificent wilderness run with excellent scenery. At high flows several rapids become Class V and the whitewater becomes nearly continuous. Once peak snowmelt is over, flows drop quickly.
Hazards:  Possible log hazards, high water, hypothermia, isolation and grizzlies.
Water Craft:  kayak,wwcan,raft
Land Ownership:  National Forest
Wilderness:  Yes
Camping on River:  Limited and scattered sites in steep canyon.
Location:  In the Rocky Mtn Region (MT), 286 miles Northwest of Helena
Shuttle Logistics: 

Put-in: Access to Schafer Meadows is by pack train or light plane; for more information contact the USFS.

Take-out: US Hwy 2 follows the river from Bear Creek to West Glacier providing numerous accesses. Essex Bridge is the US Hwy 2 bridge over the river.
