Character/Similar To:  Relatively small, straight forward rapids through scenic desert canyon.
Hazards:  Isolation, cold water, difficult terrain and sudden weather changes. Rattlesnakes

Wilderness:  Mostly
Camping on River:  Good sites located below Basalt rapid (mile 16) and in Great Basalt Canyon (mile 16-19), and Arch Rocks (mile 20). Sites are sparse after mile 50.
Location:  In the Pacific Region (OR), 230 miles East of Salem
Shuttle Logistics: 

Put-in: Located at the east end of the OR Hwy 218 Bridge over the John Day.

Take-out: Located on the right bank below the OR Hwy 206 Bridge over the John Day.
