| North Fork, Horseshoe Bend to Steamboat on the Umpqua River |
This section of the North Umpqua is fun Class III pool-drop with one class IV. Paddle this section for a small step up from the Boulder Flat to Horseshoe Bend section. Although the two runs are very similar this lower section contains steeper rapids.
Two rapids to look out for are called “Eiffel Tower” and “Pinball”. Eiffel Tower Rapid is hard to spot from river level but can be scouted from the road. This rapid has a class III lead in to a class IV- hole at the bottom. Stay right through this rapid to avoid the hole. In a raft this is a great place to splash your passengers.
Pinball is the most technical rapid on the run. After you pass under a bridge look to river left for a large gravel bar, scout from here. Enter this rapid on river left and exit right. Do not enter this rapid on the right because there is a large log blocking the right channel. Stop just below Pinball for a nice spot to eat lunch and take a nap in the sun.
Below Pinball the river slows down. For the next few miles there are a number of class III drops followed by long pools. Take out on river right.
For a long day link this run with the Boulder Flat to Horseshoe Bend section.
