Initially wide and mild this section of the James begins to pick up as it passes through a gap in the Blue Ridge Mountains leading to Balcony Falls where large boulders and massive ledges create the runs best whitewater. The run ends with a two mile paddle through slack water to the boat ramp at Snowden. |

| Shuttle Logistics: |
Put-in: From I-81, take US 60 into Buena Vista, turn right onto US 501 and head south to Glasgow. Take the first left and drive a half mile to the putin, Locker Landing which is actually on the Muary River a few yards upstream from its confluence with the James.
Take-out: Head back to US 501, turn right and wind your way about 5 miles through the mountains and eventually back to river level. Take-out is located at the public boat ramp at Snowden. |
