 The towns of Marblemount and Rockport are situated on the last large river plain in the Upper Skagit River Valley. The present highway follows the route of Indians, pack trains and pioneer wagons as it passes through the valley up the river and eventually over the North Cascades mountain range. The Skagit River has a Wild and Scenic designation and is a popular river for rafting, kayaking and canoeing. Hikers and climbers visit the area for some of the best back-country alpine experiences afforded in the lower 48 states. A special winter activity is bald eagle watching, at it's height in January. For the shutterbug, the photographic opportunities are endless - Winter, Spring, Summer or Autumn.
If you find your relaxation in fishing, this is the place to give it a try. The Skagit, Cascade and Sauk Rivers has populations of steelhead, salmon and trout. Check with the locals for licenses and current conditions. There are boat launches in Marblemount, Rockport, and the Sauk valley as well as on the lakes of Ross, Diable and Gorge behind the dams. |
